Global Mobile, one of the six WiMAX operators in Taiwan, is negotiating production of customized WiMAX/3G dual-mode smartphones with Taiwan-based ODMs for planned launches in the second half of 2011, according to company chairwoman and CEO Rosemary Ho. In addition, Global Mobile will soon launch home-use WiMAX routers with an expected procurement volume of 50,000 units in 2011 and plans to order nearly 100,000 personal WiMAX routers, Ho indicated. Global Mobile has cooperated with Next TV, a Hong Kong-based operator of IPTV channels in the Taiwan market, to help bring in subscribers, Ho noted. With nearly 20,000 subscribers currently, Global Mobile aims to increase the number to 100,000-160,000 by the end of 2011, 250,000 by the end of 2012 and 1.3 million eventually, Ho pointed out. Global Mobile has set a goal of making WiMAX able to meet demand for 4G services in Taiwan before TD-LTE becomes commercial globally, Ho emphasized.
