Chloe Yu, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Friday 17 December 2010]
Taiwan WiMAX operator Tatung InfoComm is talking about joint procurement of base station equipment with fellow operators Vee TIME, Global Mobile, Vmax Telecom and First International Telecom (Fitel), a bid to reach the same or compatible equipment specifications to minimize unit procurement costs and facilitate interoperability in the future, according to Tatung InfoComm. Joint procurement is expected to begin in the first half of 2011, with each company possibly set to procure 1,000 WiMAX base stations over the next three years, Tatung InfoComm pointed out. If the joint procurement is successful, Tatung InfoComm plans to extend to terminal devices, the company indicated. Tatung InfoComm has set up 450 base stations and estimates that complete coverage of its service market needs 2,000 base stations in total, the company noted.
