China Mobile touts Taiwan-based device makers to boost TD-LTE

China Mobile will seek supporting terminal devices from Taiwan-based makers to facilitate its promotion of TD-LTE, according to company chairman Wang Jianzhou at a 4G summit forum held by China Mobile in Shanghai on October 20. The development of TD-LTE has large potential but hinges on the availability of commercial TD-LTE hand-held devices which are compatible with FDD-LTE, Wang stressed. Because Taiwan has developed WiMAX for many years, China Mobile needs contributions from Taiwan-based players of the WiMAX supply chain for TD-LTE terminal devices, base stations and chips, Wang pointed out. Among Taiwan-based enterprises, HTC and Quanta Computer are most likely to become China Mobile's TD-LTE partners, according to industry sources in Taiwan. Quanta Computer unveiled a TD-LTE-enabled tablet PC model at the forum, the sources indicated.
