China, India are indicators of global 4G development, says P1 CEO

China and India are two large markets to become indicators of the global development of 4G broadband wireless access to the Internet, according to CEO Michael Lai for Malaysia-based WiMAX operator Packet One Networks (P1). If China and/or India decide to introduce 4G, it will kick off the development of the 4G industry around the world, Lai pointed out. While P1 is licensed to operate WiMAX at a 2.3GHz band, the company has newly obtained licensed use of 2.5-2.6GHz from the Malaysia government and will decide to adopt a standard between WiMAX and TD-LTE (time division-Long Term Evolution), a version of LTE been developing by China Mobile Communications, by mid-2011, Lai indicated. P1 has 200,000 WiMAX subscribers currently and expects the number to increase to 280,000 at the end of 2010, double the level at the end of 2009, Lai noted. P1 has considered cooperation with Taiwan-based smartphone vendor HTC to procure WiMAX/3G dual-mode handsets, Lai said.
