Taiwan government affirms support of WiMAX development

Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), in response to a call for continued development of WiMAX by local WiMAX operators and terminal equipment makers at a press conference on July 20, expressed its firm support in a July 20 press release. The Taiwan government began to boost development of WiMAX in 2005 through R&D subsidies, the release of operational frequency bands, implementation of the Mobile Taiwan Program (M-Taiwan) and international cooperation, MOEA indicated. Consequently, a complete WiMAX ecosystem, and industry supply chain, has been established in Taiwan, with Taiwan-based makers shipping 3.184 million units of WiMAX CPE globally in 2009 and to ship a forecast 8.92 million units in 2010, MOEA pointed out. Among advanced wireless broadband access technology standards, WiMAX is the best in terms of maturity of technological development and application and is expected to share 20-25% of the global market of wireless communications in the future, MOEA indicated. In addition, WiMAX is similar to 4G core technology by as much as 70-80%, MOEA noted. Through starting development early, Taiwan has built up sound basis and capacity to develop 4G technology, MOEA emphasized.
