Taiwan WiMAX operator Global Mobile to raise additional capital
Harris Lin, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 25 May 2010]
Global Mobile, one of the six WiMAX operators in Taiwan, will raise additional capital of NT$1.2 billion (US$37.5 million) in the third quarter of 2010 to support continued construction of infrastructure and introduce strategic investors including providers of content and application services as well as makers of terminal devices, according to company chairwoman Rosemary Ho at a May 24 ceremony to mark the launch of its operation in Taipei City. Global Mobile on May 24 also signed with Inventec, a Taiwan-based notebook PC ODM, for the supply of WiMAX phones, routers and other CPE devices and cooperation to develop mobile cloud computing applications, Ho indicated. In addition, Global Mobile will launch WiMAX-based VoIP services in the third quarter of 2010, Ho noted. Global Mobile has reach 98% coverage in Hsinchu City, its first service area, and expects to reach 90% coverage of Taipei City by the end of 2010, Ho pointed out. The company will begin to set up a network in Taipei County, which surrounds Taipei City, in the second half of 2010, Ho added. Global Mobile expects to reach 30,000 WiMAX subscribers by the end of 2010, still far away from the 250,000 it requires to break even, Ho pointed out.
