WiMAX equipment and CPE suppliers vying for BSNL contract

WiMAX base station suppliers are vying for a contract from Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL), the largest telecom carrier in India, as the company is reportedly reopening an open bid for WiMAX equipment, according to market sources in Taiwan. The bid was originally opened in the second quarter 2009 with a consortium formed by China-based Huawei Technologies and India-based PointRed Telecom winning the project. However, BSNL annulled the bid later and decided to reopen the bid. As BSNL's project involves the purchase of WiMAX base stations and WiMAX CPE products, a number of Taiwan-based WiMAX CPE makers have reportedly tied up with WiMAX base station suppliers to take part in the bidding, the sources indicated. PointRed, a supplier of WiMAX equipment and CPE products, has entered cooperation in the production of WiMAX CPE products with Taiwan-based network equipment makers, including JStream Technologies and Universal Scientific Industrial (USI), the sources noted.
