Vee Telecom Multimedia, one of the six WiMAX licensees in Taiwan, plans to increase it cooperation with US-based Clearwire by giving it priority to subscribe to new shares, according to Vee. Vee has signed with Clearwire to transfer know-how related to setting up and operating WiMAX infrastructure. Clearwire will provide experts to help Vee Telecom do network installation, with the Taiwan-based WiMAX operator paying for such services, said company general manager Yennun Huang In April, the two companies signed a cooperation agreement whereby the companies would cooperate on international roaming services, technological development and content applications. Vee Telecom is looking to gain expertise in system integration and content application services from Clearwire so as to shorten its time to market, said company chairman Richard Lai at that time. Vee Telecom was also in talks to source technologies from Clearwire in exchange for a stake in Vee Telecom, Lai noted. Vee Telecom is scheduled to start its commercial WiMAX operations in Taichung starting in October and aims to secure 100,000 subscribers by April 2010, according to company sources. The company will deploy 300 WiMAX base stations in Taichung and it plans to provide a combination of video, audio, data transmission and mobile telecommunications in southern Taiwan.
