Global WiMAX applications to reach 133 million users in 2012, says WiMAX Forum

There will an estimated 133 million subscribers of WiMAX services around the world in 2012, with 60 million in Asia and 22 million in North America, according to Ron Resnick, president and chairman of the WiMAX Forum, at the opening of the 2008 WiMAX Expo, Taipei. About 260 telecom carriers around the world are deploying WiMAX networks and there will be more than 500 operators of WiMAX services in 2012, Resnick indicated. The WiMAX Forum currently has about 530 members and about 40 are from Taiwan, the organization indicated. There are six WiMAX Forum Designated Certification Laboratories around the world and two of them are in Taiwan, the organization pointed out. The cumulative number of Taiwan-made WiMAX terminal products with WiMAX Forum certification will reach about 100 by the end of 2008, the organization noted. According to forecast by the Market Intelligence Center of the government-sponsored Institute for Information Industry, Taiwan's production value of WiMAX base stations and CPE (customer premises equipment) will keep growing to NT$470 billion (US$15.4 billion based on current exchange rates) in 2012.
