Taiwan market: Tatung InfoComm under pressure to expand WiMAX network
Chloe Yu, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Friday 13 January 2012]
Tatung InfoComm, a WiMAX operator in southern Taiwan, has set up fewer than 600 base stations and therefore is under the pressure of expanding its network to meet the required minimum penetration to maintain its license, according to industry sources. The National Communications Commission is expected to inspect the Tatung InfoComm's WiMAX penetration rate in July 2013 and until then the company has to add at least 600 base stations to reach the required minimum level, the sources said, adding the network expansion will cost about NT$800-900 million (US$26.7-30.0 million). Tatung InfoComm is mulling whether to expand the network to keep the license or quit without expanding, the sources said.
