Taiwan WiMAX operators seeking merger
Chloe Yu, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 1 June 2011]
The six WiMAX operators in Taiwan have faced the common problem of difficulty to increase the number of subscribers and, to solve the problem, four of them have been talking about mergers to combine operating resources and avoid duplicated investment in deploying base stations to save infrastructure costs, according to industry sources. The four WiMAX operators are Global Mobile, Vmax Telecom, Vee TIME and Tatung InfoComm, the sources pointed out. The four companies are considering merging into two operators, one operating in the northern half of Taiwan and the other in the south. But the WiMAX operators will only be allowed to merge if they have set up networks to cover at 70% of the total population in their service areas, the sources indicated. As the regulations pose a critical problem that WiMAX operators have to continue investing in infrastructure, the four have called for amendments to the regulations.
