Chloe Yu, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 7 September 2010]
Global Mobile, one of the six WiMAX operators in Taiwan, will procure 1,000 WiMAX base stations from Nokia Siemens Networks to expand its networks in northern Taiwan to reach a coverage ratio of 90% in the Taipei metropolitan area and 80% in outer Taipei, according to company president Stephen Tsai. The procurement will cost an estimated NT$2 billion (US$62.5 million), with shipments to begin at the end of 2010 and deployment of the base stations to be finished in 2012, Tsai indicated. The equipment features the flexibility to be modified into IEEE802.16m (WiMAX2), an upgrade version of WiMAX (802.16e), or TD-LTE, Tsai pointed out.
