First International Telecom (Fitel), one of the six WiMAX licensees in Taiwan, will start operation in Hsinchu City, northern Taiwan on September 9 and then in Taipei in November-December 2010, according to the company. Fitel is the last WiMAX licensee to begin operating. Fitel is the only operator of PHS low-power mobile communication services in Taiwan, and will target 40,000 PHS subscribers, mostly working in Hsinchu Science Park, for its WiMAX services, the company pointed out. Fitel has set up 40 WiMAX base stations in Hsinchu and will expand the network to 80 eventually, the company indicated. Fitel procured 10,000 USB dongles for the operation, the company said. In preparation for operation in Taipei, Fitel has set up 50 WiMAX base stations and plans to join the trial operation of roaming services by another three WiMAX operators, Tatung InfoComm, Global Mobile and Vee TIME, by the end of 2010, Fitel noted.
