CEO Howard Chen for Gemtek Technology, a maker of wireless broadband communication devices, has recommended that the Taiwan government invest an estimated US$1 billion to build a nationwide WiMAX infrastructure for the six local WiMAX operators to provide MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) services and innovative WiMAX applications. Chen said at a July 20 press conference that the recommendation was made on behalf of Taiwan's major WiMAX CPE (customer premises equipment) makers, including Gemtek, Quanta Computer, ZyXEL Communications and D-Link. Gemtek shipped 600,000 units of WiMAX CPE in 2009 and the shipment volume in 2010 will increase to 1.2 million units, Chen said. Gemtek also began shipments of WiMAX modules built in notebooks in early 2010, recording total shipments of one million units in January-June, Chen indicated.
