ITRI claims success in WiMAX trial on high-speed train

Taiwan government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) on April 12 announced its successful test of WiMAX-based mobile broadband access to the Internet, including browsing and YouTube video watching, on high-speed trains at a speed of 300km/hour, a milestone in Taiwan's WiMAX development. The mobile access to the Internet is through a Wi-Fi-based WLAN set up by in-coach WiMAX terminal equipment (access points) which connects to WiMAX base stations installed along the railroad, according to Wu Cheng-wen, general director for Information & Communications Research Laboratories (ICL) under ITRI, which is responsible for the pilot project. The tests were undertaken along a section of the high-speed railroad system in northern Taiwan and a tunnel section in Taipei City, Wu indicated. US-based Corning and Japan-based NTT and NTT Broadband Platform (NTTBP)have participated in the pilot project, with Corning providing the radio over fiber distributed antenna system for transmission of signals at high moving speeds. NTT and NTTBP offered their experience in setting up WLAN on high-speed trains in Japan, Wu said.
