Taiwan-based WiMAX operator Global Mobile plans to purchase more than 1,000 base stations to add to its WiMAX infrastructure in the northern region of Taiwan, according to the company. The company is currently evaluating offerings from three potential suppliers – Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), Motorola and Huawei Technologies – for the supply of WiMAX base stations worth about NT$2 billion (US$62.5 million), said the company, noting that it will pick a supplier at the end of February. Global Mobile plans to roll out WiMAX infrastructure covering the whole of Taipei City area by the end 2010 and to begin to extend its coverage to Taipei and Taoyuan Counties later.
