"Integration is the future," said Bill Bottoms, a veteran engineering educator and entrepreneur overseeing work on a new roadmap for chip stacks. Estimated costs to design a traditional 5nm chip could soar as high as $600 million, and "this can't continue," he said.

ARM's now-public roadmap represents its first processors that are designed for the PC space. ARM claims its chips will equal and potentially even surpass Intel's in single-threaded performance.

Samsung is set to lead the industry with 8nm, 7nm, 6nm, 5nm, 4nm and 18nm FD-SOI in its newest process technology roadmap.

NXP will ship this year as many as five SoCs made in Samsung's 28nm fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) process, including one that has been sampling for six months. Samsung is expected to announce its FD-SOI roadmap in May and is already working on RF and in-house embedded MRAM for it.

Traditional semiconductor scaling is expected to reach an end by about 2024, according to a white paper from engineers working on a new version of the semiconductor roadmap. The good news is a wide variety of new kinds of devices, chip stacks and systems innovations promise to continue benefits in computing performance, power and cost.

Intel is extending its technology roadmap as cost and complexity increase with advanced nodes. Steve Mullane, a BlueFin Research Partners analyst, said that Intel's 10nm process could be delayed two to three months.

TSMC is expected to undergo risk production of 7nm chipsets this year, and mass production next year, while Samsung now also cites an aggressive roadmap for "early 2018," meaning that the Galaxy S9 will most likely flaunt a 7nm processor.

TSMC will be ready to take orders for products on the 7nm node by as early as April 2017. This is, of course, a pretty significant announcement because it lets us know the approximate time by which we can expect GPUs and CPUs on the same node.

ITU has established the overall roadmap for the development of 5G mobile and defined the term it will apply to it as "IMT-2020".

A new leaked roadmap slide purportedly showing Intel's plans through to the end of 2016 has been published by a Finnish computer technology website. If the slide is genuine we will likely see Intel release its first 10nm Cannonlake CPUs sometime around the second and third quarters of next year.
