Taiwan-based makers' share of the global large-size TFT LCD panel market dropped to 42.4% in the second quarter of 2010 from 42.9% in the first quarter, as a result of reduced shipments of monitor applications, according to Digitimes Research. Taiwan makers shipped 70.19 million large-size panels (10-inch and above, not including 9.7-inch iPad panels) in the second quarter, rising 6.6% sequentially and 32.3% on-year, Digitimes Research figures show. But their sequential growth was lower than the worldwide average of 8.0%, resulting in a drop of their global market share. Digitimes Research senior analyst Tony Huang said Taiwan's large-size panel shipments grew on significant shipments to the TV and conventional notebook segments, with TV applications seeing a 13.2% sequential increase. But monitor panel shipments dropped, while netbook panel shipments were also weak, Huang added.
