| | In December 2004, it was reported that Compal Electronics had lost out on a follow-up notebook order from Hewlett-Packard (HP), when Quanta Computer undercut Compal’s price. Quanta was willing to accept the lower ASP (average selling price) to secure shipments that should reach 2.5-3.0 million notebooks and help the company achieve its goal of shipping 14-15 million notebooks in 2005. As for Compal, its goal of shipping 9-10 million notebooks in 2005 is now looking much harder to achieve. | | Table of contents

| | The digital-camera market looked promising at the start of 2004 for both existing and new players in Taiwan’s digital-camera sector. With three- to five-megapixel cameras expected to become mainstream, as their prices dropped to US$149-249, Taiwan manufacturers thought they could take a significant slice of the market by leveraging their low-cost integration and manufacturing experience. The makers expected international brands would be forced to outsource more OEM orders for mainstream cameras to Taiwan as cost pressures increased. | | Table of contents

| | What are the first names people think of when servers are mentioned? IBM, Sun, HP and Dell are likely to top the list. However, the box which sits in the corner of the office, or the slick 1U, 2U, 4U and up rackmount server neatly stacked in a glass-encased, climate-controlled server room is only the final result of a long and complex OEM/ODM process. The server type that most people are familiar with is the standard Intel architecture server (SIAS), which is based on the x86 architecture and was first developed by Intel. This type of server is meant to run on standard off-the-shelf x86 type hardware and processors. | | Table of contents
