What are the first names people think of when servers are mentioned? IBM, Sun, HP and Dell are likely to top the list. However, the box which sits in the corner of the office, or the slick 1U, 2U, 4U and up rackmount server neatly stacked in a glass-encased, climate-controlled server room is only the final result of a long and complex OEM/ODM process. The server type that most people are familiar with is the standard Intel architecture server (SIAS), which is based on the x86 architecture and was first developed by Intel. This type of server is meant to run on standard off-the-shelf x86 type hardware and processors.
