In a bold move to cater to the evolving energy needs of consumers, Kymco has launched its first electric scooter series featuring the Ionex BMU battery metering module, which integrates both charging and battery swapping capabilities.

Unlike previous models divided into charging and battery-swapping versions, the S Techno series features a combined design. This allows users to choose between battery swapping and charging based on their needs, providing greater flexibility for power replenishment.

Allen Ko, Chairman of Kymco Group, heralded the advent of an era where integrated charging and swapping systems will dominate Kymco's product lineup. Beyond Taiwan, Kymco plans to introduce additional models equipped with the BMU in Southeast Asia by the latter half of 2024.

In a 2023 presentation in Milan, Italy, Kymco showcased the Ionex BMU module, emphasizing its dual charging and swapping advantage. Ko argued that this hybrid approach liberates consumers from the constraints of relying on a single energy source. For everyday use, home charging is a time-saver for those who prefer convenience, while long-distance travelers can benefit from the network of swapping stations along their route.

Ko noted the distinct global variations in demand for charging and swapping solutions. While battery swapping predominates in Taiwan, Kymco's strategy is globally oriented, providing flexible solutions that adapt to local market requirements without extensive swapping infrastructure.

Addressing the Chinese market, Ko highlighted regulatory ambiguities and regional disparities. Despite China's market size, it remains dominated by electric bicycles, which account for 90% of the market. Consequently, Kymco is deprioritizing this market segment for now.

Ko also called on Taiwanese authorities to go beyond promoting swapping stations and to enhance the deployment of electric scooter charging stations in government facilities and public parking areas nationwide. This initiative aims to boost consumer adoption of electric scooters and support the government's net-zero carbon emissions target. Kymco is committed to collaborating with hotels and B&Bs to provide convenient charging options for guests.

Notably, Kymco's charging system adheres to Taiwan's established public standards for electric scooters, allowing seamless use at existing charging stations. As a result, Kymco does not plan to develop its own charging stations in Taiwan.
